I want to make some clips from different movies and make them as the source on my teaching classes, how to do this?

I wanted to put a movie onto my ipod so I can watch it on the plane when im going away. However when I put my dvd into my laptop, the movie comes up automatically, and if i try to access it through my computer there is not just one video clip that contains the entire movie. there's all these really short video and sound clips. How would I go about getting the full length movie to put it onto my ipod?
